Viewpoint: HBCU vs. PWI Debate Misses the Real Point of Higher Education

Abstract:

The debate surrounding HBCUs vs. PWIs undermine the education students receive at HBCUs. This debate further perpetuates the false sentiment that white is better. PWIs have name recognition and financial resources that HBCUs currently do not have. HBCUs make up for a lack of financial support by having an extremely loyal alumni, faculty, and staff population.

Creating an Opportunity When None Existed is Not Choice. It’s Survival.

Abstract:

The Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, has an incorrect understanding of HBCUs, believing them to be school choice. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were created because African Americans had no other educational options. There were laws in place until the 1950s that lawed for black people and white people to be educated separately. Without HBCUs, African Americans would not have opportunities to receive a college education.
