Jeff Bridges, a famous actor and activist, remarks, “35 million people in the U.S. are hungry or don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and 13 million of them are children. If another country were doing this to our children, we’d be at war.” People die every year from hunger, fatigue, and malnutrition. About one in eleven people is starving right now.

World hunger is a significant challenge that affects children all around the world, people who are like me and like some of you. According to Concern Worldwide, 9 million children die each year from hunger. Children International notes, “Around the world, an estimated 45 million children under the age of five experience acute malnutrition at any given time.” Hunger is a deep problem, and we should do more now to decrease the number of children affected each year.

To address world hunger, we have to act now. The Secretary of Agriculture should help rural farmers connect to markets. They could follow the example of the U.N. World Food Programme, which “connects small-scale farmers to markets so that they can supply their communities with lifesaving food.” This is a clear example of how we can decrease world hunger by a big margin. Another way the U.N. World Food Programme suggests that we decrease world hunger is by connecting these same farmers to “local economies while providing them with the resources to improve production.” These are just a couple of examples showing that world hunger can be decreased.

In conclusion, world hunger affects people every day across the globe. This is a very pertinent issue for everybody because, at some point, you are going to get hungry.
